Diabolik sono Io
Diabolik sono io reconstructs the mysterious story, halfway between reality and fiction, of the disappearance of ANGELO ZARCONE, the artist who drew the first issue of Diabolik. Nicknamed “the German” for his fair complexion and blond hair, all that is known about him is that after delivering to Astorina’s editorial office the pages of The King of Terror, the first Diabolik issue published in 1962, he vanished without leaving any contact information. He seemed to have evaporated into thin air.
A man on the run, a fugitive, a black shadow moving through the night, what would happen if that artist were to find himself searching for his own identity today? Who would he encounter? Angelo Zarcone or Diabolik?
Starting from this premise, the documentary imagines sketching the most accurate possible portrait of the King of Terror, drawing on a gallery of witnesses from the Olympus of comics, Milo Manara, Mario Gomboli, Alfredo Castelli, Tito Faraci, Gianni Bono, Giuseppe Palumbo, along with noir experts such as Carlo Lucarelli and Andrea Carlo Cappi, and visionary directors like the Manetti Bros. Guiding the narrative like a red thread are the Giussani Sisters, thanks to a “timeless” interview recovered from the Rai archives and the “rediscovered Super8” films of Angela and Luciana’s travels around the world.
