Lady Travellers

Lady Travellers is the premiere docuseries dedicated to the women who undertook daring journeys and explorations in the early 1900s, produced in collaboration with Spain’s TVE. They crossed the borders of forbidden cities, traversed deserts and mountain ranges, driven by a thirst for freedom and a distinctly feminine curiosity. Lady Travellers retraces the extraordinary adventures of the women who, between the 19th and 20th centuries, began to travel alone. Mixing travel notes, archival footage, and a unique visual style inspired by shadow theatre, the series brings journeys to life.

The first episode takes viewers to Tibet with Alexandra David-Néel, the first woman ever to cross into the forbidden city of Lhasa; the second follows Italian mill worker Giuseppina Croci, who crossed the Indian Ocean aboard a cargo ship and reached Shanghai at the end of the 19th century. The series then explores Mary Kingsley’s Africa, Isabella Bird’s America of pioneers and the Rocky Mountains, the Morocco of Carmen de Burgos—the first female war reporter—and the thousand-and-one-night adventures of Marga D’Andurain between the Middle East and Mecca.
