Verdi, Genio Italiano
Aloof, tireless, turbulent, three adjectives are enough to describe Giuseppe Verdi. Rejected by the Milan Conservatory—ironically, the same institution that now bears his name—he learned his craft by sitting in on rehearsals at La Scala every morning. This documentary retraces the life of the “genius,” stopping in the places that most marked his story and, naturally, his music: the humble house in Busseto; the villa in Sant’Agata, where he composed Rigoletto, Il Trovatore, and La Traviata; the great Italian theatres; then London and Paris; and finally the room at the Grand Hotel et de Milan where he passed away at the dawn of a new century.
